Ingredients
- Broken wheat - 1 cup
- Water - 1 1/2 cup
- Vegetable oil - 1 Tablespoon
- Ghee - 1 Teaspoon
- Mustard Seeds - 1/2 Teaspoon
- Cumin Seeds - 1/2 Teaspoon
- Ginger, chopped - 1 Teaspoon
- Green chillies - 1 -2 , chopped
- Curry leaves - 1 sprig
- Onion - 1 small, chopped
- Carrots, cubed - 1/4 cup
- Green peas - 1/4 cup
- Cashew nuts - 8 - 10, chopped
- Lime juice - 1/2 Teaspoon
- Salt - 1 Teaspoon
Directions
Initial Preparation:
- First wash the broken wheat well and soak it for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, strain and keep aside.
- Chop the vegetables and set aside.
Upma Preparation:
- Heat oil and ghee in a pan.
- When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds to it.
- When mustard seeds start to splutter, add asafoetida powder and stir on low heat.
- Add finely chopped ginger, finely chopped green chillies and curry leaves to this and saute for 1 minute.
- Add in the finely chopped onion and saute till it turns light golden in color.
- Add in the chopped cashew nuts and fry for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
- Add green peas, chopped carrots to this and mix well.
- Add water, enough salt to it, mix well and let it boil.
- When the water starts to boil, add in the soaked broken wheat and stir to combine.
- After that, cover and cook on low heat for 15 minutes.
- Open after 15 minutes, add in some lime juice and mix well.
- Remove from heat and keep covered for at-least 10 minutes.
- Serve warm and enjoy.
