Ingredients
  • Broken wheat - 1 cup
  • Water - 1 1/2 cup
  • Vegetable oil - 1 Tablespoon
  • Ghee - 1 Teaspoon
  • Mustard Seeds - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Cumin Seeds - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Ginger, chopped - 1 Teaspoon
  • Green chillies - 1 -2 , chopped
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Onion - 1 small, chopped
  • Carrots, cubed - 1/4 cup
  • Green peas - 1/4 cup
  • Cashew nuts - 8 - 10, chopped
  • Lime juice - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 Teaspoon
Directions
    Initial Preparation:
    1. First wash the broken wheat well and soak it for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, strain and keep aside.
    2. Chop the vegetables and set aside.
    Upma Preparation:
    1. Heat oil and ghee in a pan.
    2. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds to it.
    3. When mustard seeds start to splutter, add asafoetida powder and stir on low heat.
    4. Add finely chopped ginger, finely chopped green chillies and curry leaves to this and saute for 1 minute.
    5. Add in the finely chopped onion and saute till it turns light golden in color.
    6. Add in the chopped cashew nuts and fry for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
    7. Add green peas, chopped carrots to this and mix well.
    8. Add water, enough salt to it, mix well and let it boil.
    9. When the water starts to boil, add in the soaked broken wheat and stir to combine.
    10. After that, cover and cook on low heat for 15 minutes.
    11. Open after 15 minutes, add in some lime juice and mix well.
    12. Remove from heat and keep covered for at-least 10 minutes.
    13. Serve warm and enjoy.
